Sour Lake Texas

April 4th & 5th, 2002 Houston, Texas

UPDATE: BBQ Results for April 4th & 5th

Up up & early to rise headed east on Interstate 10 toward Beaumont, Texas, the home of Spindle Top, Rice Country, Cajun Food and the best Golden Glove Boxers in the USA.  Just before Beaumont we turned off and headed west through rain and one heck of a fog to the town of Sour Lake. What a trip!  Lake, where?  We got there in one piece, set up, and relaxed . The next morning we woke up to an alarm of oil wells pumping, birds chirping, and the smell of our neighbors BBQ.

The folks from the town were very hospitable , there was power and fresh water available at most of the spots. We tried to get a line on what the judges would be looking for up there in Cajun country, but stayed with our tried and true seasonings. No luck there, however our beans made the table! The Bean Man "Vince the Captain" used the same method. A little more "heat & sweet" did the trick; plus we all took turns stirring the pot.

Our neighbors Ronnie Brothers and his crew treated us to home style BBQ with a little Cajun flavor and was quick & ready with the practical jokes. I think he jinxed our bbq!

Ronnie Latil  was a great host and we look forward to next years competition in the town of Sour Lake!
