Annual Barbeque Cook-Off

UPDATE: BBQ Results for June 7th & 8th

June 10, 2002

It’s a hot day in June, almost too hot to load equipment, travel on the busiest freeway in the world, head west, set up two tents, a fence, the pit, and then get ready for BBQ, but we did! We had some extra help this time thanks to Courtney Brien, Joey Russell, and Brittany Bayles the reader.  No way we could have set up the big tent without their help. Thanks!

Our host David Perkins did a superb job. The Colorado County Fair Grounds were absolutely beautiful. What a wonderful place for a cook-off!

As usual, after the set up, Darrell jumped on the pit and got it ready. Vince showed up with the fence and tables and of course here comes Ron with the Beer.  Jan & Wesley came out to visit and Linn & Ellen showed up to support the chairs.  A little sausage with beer was the main theme of the evening however Ron finished it off with a great tasting chicken and Vince cooked up some finger lickin’ ribs. With the help of Courtney’s supervision, Don & Darrell cut some of the fat off the Briskets and then did the final brisket prep for the smoker. After visiting our cooking competitors and telling lies we shut it all down to rest for the next day’s journey.

Saturday turned out to be a beautiful day with a soft summer breeze. Great day for BBQ! Mom & Albert showed up to give their support as well as Courtney Brien, Mark and Laura Walters, Kim & Alaina, Jan, Wes, Wendy, and Mrs. Weems and of course the rest of the crew. By the way, thanks Courtney for the batteries & beer. They both put the juice in the right places. Hey Jan, great dessert! Thanks!

Vince turned in the beans, Ron turned in the chicken, Don & Darrell tried to pull the ribs from the pit but the bones fell all over the place but they were turned in anyway and then we took a peek at the briskets and turned them in too! Time to relax, visit, and reflect.

The Head Judges were Charlie & Joy and I must say they run a pretty tight ship. We are proud to be a part of the Texas Gulf Coast BBQ Pit. Bobby Blankenship passed out the awards and kept the event running smooth.

Ok, for the finals. The Moonlite Cooker’s placed 7th in Brisket, 4th in Chicken, probably last in Ribs, and made the final table on Beans!

The team has decided it’s time to help out with some of the cook-offs by contributing some support to our Judges and Pit in the next couple of months. We will let you know the events and will continue our competition again starting in September. Check out the schedule under events.

For those of you who did not make the cook, perhaps you can come out the next time. Check out our website for dates & times of coming events.
