Farm & Ranch Club

October 18th & 19th Houston, TX

UPDATE: BBQ Results for October 18th & 19th

The Harris County Farm & Ranch Club really came up with a great idea to change the BBQ Cook-Off location from the grounds area to the West Parking Lot area. Seems like every year it rains at this time and this year was no exception. I'm sure that most of the guest would have preferred the parking the other way around but the cook off teams have the heavy pits, the set up and tear down, and are the last ones to leave. So, hat's off to the ones who made the decision to have the cook-off on the parking lot area.

I have no idea why,  but the man upstairs was looking out after all of us again and we give thanks.  We set up our pits and tents and at the end of the day, the rain came down. It rained on and off all weekend and when it was time to tear down the rain didn't come back until later that afternoon.

Friday evening Ron came up with some great sausage and Vince brought the sauerkraut and the combination of the two were outstanding. Meat inspection was at 5:00PM and this was great because this allowed us to get an early start on our competition prep. No beans or chili competition on this cook, we have chicken, ribs, & brisket with turn in times 2 hours apart.  With the 2 hour window, it sure makes it easier to cook on the same pit.

We met up with old & new friends and had a great time. Our location was right next to the West Gate and easy to find. The Throw Down Cooker's graced us with music and a family atmosphere. David Slusher (Bandana Cooker's) was right across the walk way and the guys from Tomball (The Wild Bunch) were also our neighbors. Friday night was on the calm side and Saturday night was a battle of the speakers. It was great to see Eileen and Gummi. They are gearing up to a trip to Viking Country. Thanks to Joey Russell, I know those people who drove into the ditch and got their car stuck really appreciated his help. Bobby & Jill were on site with tales of Kansas City. Jill, we hope you get to feeling better.

How'd we do? The competition was pretty tough with over 100 teams. Our Chicken was absolutely wonderful, we won't talk about the ribs, and the brisket was one of our best. It appears we need to do a little more spying on our neighbors. They just won't give it up. One can't blame them, I mean after all the winners have certainly paid some dues. I want you know, we have some really good cooker's here in Texas. Let me tell you friends, if you get the time you might consider coming out and help judge the food. It's easy and quite an experience. Think about it!

Lon & Sandy Babcock really did a wonderful  job and also our thanks to the folks with The Farm & Ranch Club. You might check out their website for local events. ( http://www.hfrc.org/)

For those of you who did not make the cook, perhaps you can come out the next time. Check out our website for dates & times of coming events.
