Celebrate Texas

Independence Day State Championship BBQ Cook-Off

February 28th & March 1st

UPDATE: BBQ Results

Dripping Springs, Texas located on Hwy 290 near Austin was the site of "Celebrate Texas Independence Day State Championship BBQ Cook-Off". Sanctioned by The Lone Star Barbecue Society, there were approximately 48 teams competing. Just like all the teams, we weathered the weather. Our site was next to The BCB Cookers from Clute, TX (Russell, Cecilia, & Jo Russell (Mom) and on the other side was the Lil' Pit of Heaven (Mr. & Mrs. Connie Baker) from Burleson, Texas. Real nice folks! We had a chance to visit with friends and also meet some real nice people.

Don, Linn, Darrell, & Ron made the trip, Vince had a previous engagement. We did our best and with this crowd of competitors one has to really prepare some good BBQ. Bottom line, we placed 8th in Ribs. Best ribs we ever made! We'll keep on keeping on!. Hopefully our BBQ cooking  will get better! We get lot's of tips however like everything else, there's no better teacher than experience.

The bearings on one of the pit axles overheated and burned to fine granulated powder so we had to limp home at 55 mph on 3 wheels. We made it just fine. Thanks to Monty & Joyce with Klose Pits we've already replaced both axles on the pit.  Bigger is Better! Also some buddy bearings should help. Hopefully this won't happen again. The pit boss has an added job now and that's to re-grease the bearings prior to each trip.

Rickye Lennon and crew were very hospitable and put on a great show. Cathy Demottier was our Head Judge. Not her first Rodeo for sure! Thanks Cathy for keeping things running smoothly and on time.

We will be in West, TX on March 14th and 15th. That's North of Waco, TX and South of Hillsboro, TX. on Hwy 77off of FM 2114.

For those of you who did not make the cook, perhaps you can come out the next time. Check out our website for dates & times of coming events.
